Philippians 4:8-14
"I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances"-v11
We're all looking for contentment, yet we don't find it.
We struggle with being content, primarily because we fail to trust God.
We struggle to hope in Christ, and trust God in every part of our life.
What's underneath our discontentment, and how do we nurture a content heart?
Contentment(definition):
Contentment is enormative in the old church.
2 Corinthians 12; Even in the hard circumstances, Paul is content. (Because when I am weak, He is strong)
1 Timothy 6
Hebrews 13:5-6
Contentment is the direct fruit of having no higher ambition than to be at the Lord's disposal and be the Lord's.
Genesis 2 (example of mankind having complete contentment in God)
Discontentment -> sin, rebellion against God
First sin in the Bible; mankind's discontentment in God
Jesus comes to save us from the state of being discontent in God.
A discontented heart is HORRIBLE, and it needs to be killed.
Discontentment->grumbling and murmury against God.
-> Lack of gratitude towards God: He did so much for us through Christ, yet we are still so frustrated with everything.
-> Arrogance: We believe we have a better plan than God does. We get frustrated at him, beause we want to be sovereign, to manage and control our lives.(Genesis 3)
-> Lust and greed: Attitude of I WANT MORE. God has given us so much, yet we want other things too. We want more. Thank you, but I want more.
-> Entitlement: We believe that God is in our debt...
At bottom, what is driving our discontentment is idolatory. The sin beneath the every sin is our failure to believe that everything we want is in Jesus Christ.
When discontentment gives birth in our life, it erodes worship. We cannot have our life characterised by worhsip when we're unsatisfied with what He's done in our life.
God is a gracious father, but because we are discontent, we don't receive with gratitude, but rather "I want something else." We, like little children, are so intent on wanting something else, because don't understand what is being offered.
Discontentment hinders joyful obedience. It robs your ability to celebrate receiving what...
Thinking you're going to be content with having a spouse, or a significant other, is wrong.
Contentment is one of the flowers of heaven, and we need to maintain and cultivate it. It HAS to be nurtured.
Repent of your discontentment, your grumbling and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you contentment.
Contentment is something to be learned. (Psalm 90) We need to be taught to number our days, in the same way that we need to be taught contentment.
Repent
Ask God to teach you
Look to Jesus Christ
v13- I can be content in every circumstance through Jesus Christ.
Look to Him
Jesus entrusts himself to God even to the point of death. "Not my will, but yours" -True contentment.
Look to Christ until he changes our hearts.
